Overview

The Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon Gen 9 continues the premium ThinkPad formula with a thin and light chassis, a 14-inch 16:10 display, and Intel Core i7-1165G7 hardware. In this configuration, it combines 16 GB LPDDR4x memory, a 512 GB SSD, integrated Intel Iris Xe graphics, and business-focused features such as a fingerprint reader and IR webcam. It is positioned for professionals who want mobility, reliability, and solid daily productivity performance.

Design and Build

The laptop uses a carbon-fiber lid with an aluminum-alloy keyboard deck and bottom panel. The build feels solid, and the compact 1.13 kg body is easy to carry for daily commuting. The hinge opens smoothly with one hand and supports up to 180 degrees. The minimalist black styling keeps the classic ThinkPad look, with red accents around the TrackPoint area.

Display, Audio, and Webcam

This unit has a 14-inch IPS touchscreen with a 16:10 aspect ratio and 1920x1200 resolution. The panel is matte, rated at up to 400 nits, and reported with broad color coverage for practical content work. PWM is not observed in the source data, which is helpful for long sessions. The four-speaker system provides clear, loud sound, while the 720p IR camera is usable for calls but only average in image clarity.

Keyboard and Input Experience

The spill-resistant island keyboard has 1.5 mm key travel and white backlighting for low-light work. Large Enter, Shift, and CapsLock keys help typing accuracy, while the arrow cluster is smaller and less comfortable for heavy navigation. The glass touchpad tracks precisely and supports multi-touch gestures, and dedicated buttons above it support the TrackPoint.

Performance, Ports, and Battery Behavior

With the Core i7-1165G7 and Iris Xe graphics, the system is suited to office multitasking, web work, media playback, and light content workflows. It is not intended for modern demanding games. Memory is soldered and cannot be upgraded, while SSD replacement is possible. Connectivity is strong for a thin laptop, including dual Thunderbolt 4 and HDMI. The 57 Wh battery delivers mid-range endurance in the source test context, around 7 hours of web use and about 8 hours of 1080p video playback, with much shorter runtime under heavy loads. Surface temperatures and fan noise remain controlled in typical use.

Verdict

The ThinkPad X1 Carbon Gen 9 is a premium business ultraportable for users who value low weight, practical ports, a 16:10 touchscreen, and dependable everyday performance. Its main compromises are non-upgradeable RAM and a price level that can feel high for a system without discrete graphics. For mobile professionals focused on build quality and productivity, it remains a strong option.
